We have been studying the properties of water and our investigation, "Drops on a Penny," tested water surface tension. First we found out how many drops of water would fit on a nickel. Then, we created a hypothesis about how many drops would fit on a penny. We tested our hypotheses and also found out which side of the penny (heads or tails) would hold more drops of water.
I was so proud of my students during this activity! They were thinking, acting and investigating like real scientists! :-)

To watch the SLIDESHOW of PICTURES from our Science Work Sample click HERE!
On my first day back after my surgery, we delved right in to our next math unit! Together, we created a "living graph." Students divided themselves up based on shirt colors and we ventured outside for some sunshine as we created a human bar graph and a human circle graph to represent our results!

At our Holiday Assembly Ms. Allen was caught smooching .... a PIG!

As a reward for Kelly students reaching their goal in the Blast Off With Reading Contest, Ms. Sarah had to dye her hair pink and Ms. Allen had to kiss a pig! In front of the entire school, Ms. Allen made good on her promise and planted a big smooch right on the pig's nose!

Here's a pic of Ms. Allen and the piggy just before the big smooch!

We enjoyed this play so much, that we decided to go ahead and perform the play ourselves! During our Walk to Read time, we split up in to 3 groups and each group cast their own actors, created their own costumes, made props and performed their own version of the play. We had a great time and got a chance to cheer each other on as our wonderful actors took the stage!

Special thanks to our awesome reading teachers Ms. Barb and Ms. C, who helped direct the plays!

Click HERE to see a slideshow of our Wings for the King performances!
Jameson Watershed Trip - Dec 2011

After learning all about eco-friendly ways to take care of our rain water in the class, we were able to take a class trip to the Jameson Watershed and meet up with Ms. Lynn Vanderkamp once again!

It was a crisp and cold day, as we walked down the Springwater Corridor Trail. Luckily, we went the RIGHT way this time! When we got to the Watershed site Ms. Lynn and her volunteers split us up in to two groups - to do two different activities. One activity involved identifying an invasive species of Ivy and working to remove it from the landscape. The other activity was going down to the creek and testing the oxygen level of the water to see if it could sustain fish life.
All students had a chance to try both activities and I was so proud of all their hard work. This was a great trip, and we learned so much! Even though it was cold weather, we did get some sun!
Afterward, Lynn and her volunteers treated everyone to some hot cocoa as a reward for all of our hard work!

A special thank you to my parent volunteers: Mrs. Li, Mrs. Mendez and MY dad, Mr. Mosqueda! :)

Click HERE to see a slide show of our trip!
Soak It Up - Dec 2011

In December, we had the pleasure of a classroom visit from Ms. Lynn Vanderkamp from the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services. She brought in a great activity called Soak It Up!
Here is a description of the activity:

Soak It Up- Sustainable Stormwater Solutions

Grades 5 - college

Stormwater runoff from streets, sidewalks and roofs can carry pollution to streams and rivers. Working with aerial maps of a model neighborhood, teams of students calculate area, percentage of pervious and impervious cover, and determine runoff. Students then redesign their neighborhoods with sustainable stormwater facilities such as bioswales, ecoroofs, green streets and stormwater planters. This lesson integrates math and science topics.

This was a very challenging activity, and I was excited to see that everyone worked hard and didn't give up. By working together in groups we ended up creating some very eco-friendly communities! Nice work guys!

Click HERE to watch a slideshow of our Soak It Up! activity!
All students did an incredible job and planted over 300 plants - all native species to Oregon. I was so impressed by the hard work everyone put in, despite the fact that it was very cold out! What a great way to get out of the classroom, learn about environmental science, AND give back to our community!
Special thanks to Mrs. Mendez for chaperoning the trip!

Click HERE to watch the slideshow of our trip!

YES, these monologues were 100% written by the students and they did a GREAT job! This was definitely one of the highlights that I will always remember from my time in Mrs. Chedester's 6th grade class at Marysville School. <3!

Click the links below to see the monologues:

Maya as Aphrodite

Zack as Heracles

Valentina as Aphrodite
